For over 30 years WCAT has been a trusted community partner. WCAT is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with five staff members and a handful of volunteers. WCAT’s mission is to inform, connect, and provide equitable access for Wakefield residents to a wide range of programming: government meetings, public health updates, promotion of the arts, ceremonies, exercise programs, religious programs, high school sports, local interest shows, and podcasts made by community members.

Over ninety percent of WCAT’s funding comes from the cable franchise fees provided by Comcast, Verizon, and RCN (Wakefield’s cable providers). The rest comes through memberships, underwriters, and fundraising. Streaming services like Hulu and Netflix saw larger audiences than traditional cable last year as more people are making the switch to streaming-only households. This translates to a loss of funding for WCAT.
