Washington recognizes the importance of local news – including local cable access stations

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) led a group of 14 democratic senators, including Massachusetts Senator Edward Markey, in introducing a resolution designating April 2023 as “Preserving and Protecting Local News Month.” The resolution recognizes local news as a public good that serves an essential function in the democracy of the United States.

A portion of the resolution reads: “Whereas local cable franchises routinely provide for public, educational, and government access channels on their systems, and those channels –

  • Offer vital local civic programming that informs communities;
  • Provide news and information not often available on other local broadcast channels or cable;
  • Supplement local journalism; and
  • At times, are the only source for local news.”

Movies by the Lake

Movies by the Lake is returning for the eighth year. An average of 300-350 area residents come together to attend a large outdoor movie theater on Thursday nights every summer.

This spring, more than 600 local residents helped pick the 2023 movies with an online poll (for licensing reasons movie titles can’t be printed in the media). The movie dates are July 13, 20, and 27, and August 3. The rain date (used for only one movie) will be August 10.

Returning movie sponsors-to-date (and movies sponsored) included Rebirth Body Transformation Center (4), The Savings Bank (4), Boys and Girls Clubs of Stoneham and Wakefield (1-2), Floramo’s Restaurant in Wakefield (1) plus Wakefield Rotary, Kids’ Test Kitchen, and The Gingerbread Construction Co.
